What is Static Friction?

Static friction can be defined as the friction or force that is in contact with two objects which are not moving. Another name for static friction is called starting friction or limiting friction. Static friction is denoted by the symbol ‘Fs’. SI unit of static friction is Newton.

The formula of static friction can be classified as,

Fs = μs * N

Fs = static friction.

μs = static friction coefficient.

N = Normal Force.

And also, the static friction coefficient formula is

μs = Fs / N

And also, the static friction coefficient formula is

N = Fs / μs

How to Find the Static Friction?

Below are the steps (or) guidelines to calculate the static friction.

  • The first and foremost thing to calculate is to note down the values in the given problem.
  • Next step is applying the formula.
  • Finally, you will get the answer.

Static Friction with Example

Example:

Question: A force of 250 N is acted on some box of 3kg put static on the floor. And the coefficient of friction is 0.1, then determine the static friction?

Solution:

Given values are, N = 250 N, μs = 0.1.

As we know that, static friction formula is,

Fs = μs * N

= 0.1 * 250 N = 25 N.

Therefore, the static friction is 25 N.
